La technologie sélectionnée, comparée aux alternatives technologiques existantes, s’est avérée être la plus durable, compte tenu de plusieurs aspects, à savoir:

En outre, le projet a contribué à promouvoir l’image de la responsabilité environnementale et à améliorer la notation ESG de l’entreprise cliente.

Le client auquel se rapporte le projet décrit ici est une multinationale qui se consacre à la production d’emballages souples utilisés dans une variété d’applications dans un large éventail de secteurs, notamment l’alimentation, les boissons, les soins de santé, les produits d’entretien de la maison et les soins personnels. En 2018, l’entreprise a pris l’engagement ambitieux de rendre tous ses emballages recyclables ou réutilisables d’ici 2025, faisant ainsi preuve d’un engagement fort en faveur de la durabilité environnementale.

Conformément à cette politique, l’entreprise a installé plusieurs lignes d’enduction à base d’eau pour la production de films techniques multicouches de haute performance et recyclables. Le traitement des émissions atmosphériques provenant des processus de peinture à l’eau caractéristiques des lignes de production du client a été soigneusement étudié, en comparant les différentes technologies disponibles et en évaluant laquelle serait la plus efficace et la plus durable.

À ce stade de l’évaluation technique, les technologies d’oxydation thermique ont été écartées, car elles se caractérisent par une consommation d’énergie élevée et un fort impact sur la production de CO2.

Les technologies de récupération des COV n’étaient pas réalisables, en raison de la complexité du mélange de COV présent et de la faible quantité utilisée, qui ne justifiait pas économiquement l’investissement dans une installation de récupération des solvants.

Les technologies d’adsorption, par exemple le charbon actif, n’ont pas été considérées comme optimales en raison de la consommation élevée de charbon actif qui serait nécessaire pour traiter des émissions dont les caractéristiques sont trop éloignées des caractéristiques optimales pour permettre une adsorption efficace.

Les vernis utilisés dans les procédés d’enduction à l’eau des emballages souples contiennent des produits qui doivent nécessairement être compatibles avec la présence d’eau, qui reste le principal solvant utilisé pour l’application du vernis sur le film souple ; ces produits relèvent principalement des espèces chimiques suivantes:

Amines : peuvent provoquer une irritation de la peau, des voies respiratoires et des yeux et ont un impact majeur sur la formation d’ozone troposphérique, un polluant atmosphérique nocif, et contribuent à la contamination des eaux de surface et des eaux souterraines, endommageant les écosystèmes aquatiques.
Cétones : elles peuvent provoquer des irritations cutanées et respiratoires, polluer l’air et l’eau ; si elles sont traitées avec du charbon actif, elles peuvent générer une inflammabilité à basse température, provoquant souvent des incendies.
Alcools : peuvent nuire gravement à la santé s’ils sont ingérés ou inhalés en grandes quantités. Ils peuvent contribuer à l’effet de serre.
Ammoniac : ce composé peut irriter les yeux, le nez et la gorge, et provoquer des lésions pulmonaires s’il est inhalé en fortes concentrations. L’ammoniac peut polluer les eaux de surface et les eaux souterraines, causant des dommages aux écosystèmes aquatiques.
Nitriles : utilisés comme solvants et additifs, ils sont toxiques pour les organismes aquatiques et peuvent polluer les eaux de surface s’ils ne sont pas traités correctement.

La solution identifiée et capable d’offrir les meilleures performances, non seulement en termes d’efficacité d’élimination, mais aussi en termes de facilité d’utilisation, de maîtrise des coûts d’exploitation et de minimisation des interférences avec le processus de production du client, impliquait la réduction par voie humide des polluants en raison de leur grande solubilité dans l’eau.

L’unité de réduction des émissions se compose d’une première section verticale, dans laquelle l’air pollué traverse une grande surface de contact avec l’eau, obtenue grâce à l’installation de corps de remplissage spécialement conçus.

Sur cette surface, les polluants tendent à se solubiliser dans l’eau, en se transférant de l’air, qui est ainsi purifié. Le flux constant d’eau est garanti par un circuit d’alimentation spécial qui, au moyen de pompes, recycle l’eau utilisée dans le processus, limitant ainsi la consommation d’eau au minimum.

Une deuxième section finale, dans laquelle de l’eau non recyclée est introduite, permet de poursuivre l’abattement des infimes quantités résiduelles de polluants qui n’ont pas été éliminées dans la première section, ce qui permet d’obtenir les rendements d’abattement les plus élevés.

Certains facteurs influençant fortement la solubilité dans l’eau des composés chimiques, il est prévu de contrôler la température de l’eau utilisée dans le processus au moyen d’une section de refroidissement appropriée.

L’installation fonctionne de manière entièrement automatique et, afin d’atteindre à tout moment la plus grande efficacité de purification, tous les paramètres les plus importants du processus sont contrôlés en permanence grâce à des instruments sophistiqués, notamment:

la consommation d’eau
la quantité d’eau rejetée,
la concentration en sel de l’eau utilisée
émissions de COV par les cheminées
la consommation d’électricité
